　近世敦賀の有力農民であった柴田権右衛門（しばたごんえもん）が築いた屋敷です。敦賀一の名峰野坂山を借景とする美しい池泉庭園（ちせんていえん）と武家調の屋敷構えや書院が特徴で、甘棠館（かんとうかん）と称されています。往時には小浜藩主の休憩所になっていました。
　昭和7年に庭園と書院が、平成19年には屋敷地全体が国の名勝に指定されているほか、市指定記念物ともなっており、芸術的・歴史的価値を高く評価された貴重な文化財です。
　庭園にある蓬莱島には鶴を象徴する飾り石があり、幅広の石を立てて翼を表現し、長くて低い石を首に表現しています。また、この島には亀を象徴する石があります。中国の神仙思想に基づいて、見る人の長寿と幸福を願って作られました。
　

The Shibata Garden is designed to be viewed from the drawing room. Centered around a pond, the garden is famous for its “borrowed landscape,” which incorporates Mt. Nosaka as an important element of the overall composition.
The garden was built by Shibata Gon’emon in the 17th century and was used as a resting place for the lord of the Obama domain.
Tsuruga City owns the garden today and it has been designated as a national scenic spot.
There is a stone ornament symbolizing a crane on Horaijima Island. A wide standing stone represents the wings and a long, low stone represents the neck. There is also a stone symbolizing a tortoise on the island. These were created to grant viewers a long life and happiness, based on the Chinese tradition of worshiping the crane and tortoise for their longevity.

休日：毎週水曜日（水曜日が祝日の場合はその翌日）・年末年始（12月29日から翌年1月3日まで）

入館料：一般200円　中学生以下100円／団体（20名以上）一般150円　中学生以下50円
障がい者手帳をお持ちの方は手帳をご提示いただきますと、ご本人と付き添いの方1名が無料となります。

Holidays: Every Wednesday （the following day if Wednesday is a public holiday）, New Year's holidays （from December 29th until January 3 of the following year）
Admission fee: 200 yen for adults, 100 yen for junior high school students and under, 150 yen for groups （more than 20 people）, 50 yen for junior high school students and under.
